Do you suffer from diabetes?
If you do not…
Yet you are still plagued with bad breath, even though you’ve taken all known steps to eradicate it; such as ensuring that you maintain the highest standard of oral hygiene and being careful not to eat and drink foods and beverages that are known to generate bad breath, it may, and only may, indicate that you are a diabetic. It would therefore be a sensible precaution to visit your doctor to be examined for the possibility of having an illness such as diabetes that might be the underlying cause of your problem
If you do…
You may not yet have discovered that diabetes can be the cause of your bad breath. The up side though, is that it may be easier to fix than you may have thought.
You will be conversant with the need to be continually aware of your blood sugar levels. But did you know that a healthy level of blood sugars can be maintained by following a healthy diet?
Well, generally speaking, they can.
There is no need for a special diet. The major things to bear in mind are:
• Aim to eat a minimum of 4.5 oz (130 grams) of high fiber carbohydrates daily (bread, pasta, rice, cereals, starchy vegetables and fruit)
• Stay clear of full fat dairy products (milk, cream, butter, cheese, ice-cream, yoghurt), meat fat, processed meat products, fried foods, pastries, cakes and food containing palm oil and coconut oil.
• Avoid candy, soda drinks and alcohol.
• Drink plenty of water
But these are only the major things in relation to diet. There are many other disciplines concerning diet as well as other matters such as weight and exercise that it is crucial to follow.
Basically it all boils down to the fact that if you do what you know you have to do to control your blood sugar levels you’ll control your halitosis as well.
But this is not always as easy to do as it is to say and it is comforting to have a back-up strategy in place for those all-too-frequent times when circumstances prevent you from maintaining your disciplines.
