Chronic Bad Breath

We know about bad breath, or Halitosis, but when this is a long term, permanent problem it is termed as chronic bad breath. Extremely unpleasant and very anti social, chronic bad breath is a lot harder to treat than the bad breath you get from things that you eat or drink. Here we look at a few of the causes behind chronic bad breath.

A main cause of chronic bad breath is a bad diet. By that I don’t mean eating garlic or onions, it’s where you not only eat the wrong foods but also eat infrequently. This smell comes from the lungs after food has been absorbed into the bloodstream. Saliva is natures mouth wash, if you don’t eat you don’t stimulate the saliva glands which results in a stale, foul smell. Eat healthily and often. If you do eat pungent food such as garlic, this will just cause short term bad breath.

Periodontal disease is another cause of chronic bad breath. Trapped food around the gum line slowly rots away and is attacked by bacteria. This in turn starts to eat away at your gums until you end up with gaps between your teeth and gums. As you can’t get into these fissures with your tooth brush, the bacteria continue to build up and the smell is constant. No amount of gum or mouthwashes will take away chronic bad breath that is caused in this way. Only a trip to your dentist will get rid of the stench.

Smoking will give you chronic bad breath, fact. It’s something you do constantly, so that stale ashtray smell will never go away unless you stop. Tar, nicotine and various other ingredients in cigarettes stick to our soft tissue and tongues like glue. You will often see a smoker with a yellow tongue. You can clean your teeth constantly, and scrub your tongue, but as soon as you light up again the smell will return.

Lesser known causes of chronic bad breath include constipation, excessive bacteria in the mouth or colon, indigestion, liver malfunction, inadequate digestion of proteins and too little stomach acid.

Many people use mouth washes religiously after they have brushed their teeth, but did you know that some mouth washes can do more harm than good? Look at the label before you buy a mouth wash. You want a one recommended by dentists that will kill ALL bacteria. A basic one will temporarily get rid of some of the bacteria from your mouth, but the bad bacteria that is causing the bad breath will remain; and will in fact multiply as a defence against again the mouth wash. So effectively, using too much of the wrong mouth wash can actually make your chronic bad breath worse. That isn’t something that they put on the label.

Self diagnosis can be difficult, depending on environment it can be very difficult to smell ones own breath. Ask a partner or loved one if you suspect you have chronic bad breath. You have to know that you’ve got it before you can cure it.
